부모님께 물려받은 탁월한 예술가적 기질에 대해서도 감사의 뜻을 표했다.
‘SMP(Scalp Micro Pigmentation)’라고 불리는 두피 문신은 두피에 미세한 바늘을 이용해 색소를 주입하는 방법으로 2002년 영국에서 두피 상처를 커버하기 위한 시술로 시작됐다. 2019년부터 미국·유럽 등 선진국에서 새로운 탈모 고민 해법으로 폭발적인 인기를 얻고 있는 가운데 작년, 미국 애리조나에서 ‘2021 SMP EXPO’가 9월 30일부터 10월 2일까지 개최됐다. 여기서 주목할 점은 영국, 미국, 프랑스, 네덜란드, 도미니카 공화국 등 세계적인 강사들과 아티스트들이 참석하여 다양한 SMP 과정에 대한 강의와 쇼가 진행됐는데 그 중심에 ‘동양인 연설자가 최초’로 무대에 섰다. 그 주인공은 바로 약 5년 전, 국내 최초 SMP 도입과 더불어 전문 SMP 교육기관, D-BLACK ACADEMY(디블랙 아카데미)를 설립한 두피 문신의 1세대이자 선구자인 ‘D.CHRIS(디크리스)’ 대표다. _김민진 기자

서울특별시 강남구 신사동 536-1 2층, 디블랙 아카데미 강남본점에서 디크리스 대표를 기다리는데 그가 등장하는 순간, 마치 하나의 SMP 예술작품이 걸어오듯 남다른 아우라가 풍겼다. 강렬하면서도 깊은 눈빛이 더해진 그와의 인터뷰에서 SMP를 단순히 이익 창출을 위한 사업이 아닌, 한 사람의 인생을 새롭게 디자인하는 예술가로서의 삶이 느껴졌다.
“친가 및 외가 할아버지에서 아버지까지 집안 대대로 탈모 유전자가 있었던 것을 어렸을 때부터 봐온 저는 외모에 한창 관심이 많았던 중학교 시절, 탈모 불안증을 가지기 시작했어요. 20대 초반, 본격적으로 진행된 탈모는 직업·연애·운동 등 제 삶의 전반을 뒤흔들 만큼 무서운 질병으로 다가왔습니다. 모발이식, 먹는 약, 바르는 약, 가발 등 몸에 무리가 있더라도 해볼 수 있는 건 다 해보아도 저에게 돌아온 건 대인기피증, 약물 부작용과 같은 얼룩진 상처뿐이었죠. 우연한 계기로 알게 된 SMP 시도 또한 수많은 실패의 아픔과 새파란 문신의 흔적만을 남겼습니다. 그렇지만 잠시나마 어설프게라도 헤어라인의 기쁨을 느꼈던 것을 희망으로 제 머리에 수차례 테스트를 했고, 7~8년이라는 긴 시간 끝에 저는 탈모인이 아닌 멋진 삭발인이 되었죠. 이후, 새로운 삶의 기쁨을 느끼면서 과거의 저와 같이 고통받는 탈모인이 또 있을 거라는 생각에 디블랙 아카데미를 런칭했습니다.”

SMP 산업은 특히 미국에서 최근 몇 년 동안 각광을 받으며, 예술적 탈모 솔루션을 소개하는 미국 최대 규모의 SMP EXPO가 연례 회의를 개최했다. 그중, ‘2021 SMP EXPO’는 디크리스 대표를 초청하기 위해 열렸으며, 약 1만 명의 인스타그램(@d_chris_black) 팔로워를 보유한 그는 계속되는 러브콜 DM에 코로나 시국이지만 조심스럽게 미국행 비행기를 탔다.
각국의 다양하고 핫한 SMP 전문가들이 모인 행사장에서 디크리스 대표는 기존 SMP의 부족한 부분을 개선해 세계 최초로 개발한 ‘ASMP(Art-SMP)’ 기술을 선보이며 참석한 전 세계 관계자들의 이목을 집중시켰다.

“ASMP 기술을 개발하기까지 먼저는 기존 SMP에 대해서도 수년 동안 연구와 자가 테스트를 통해서 ‘2D SMP’로 디블랙 아카데미의 차별성을 두었습니다. 단순히 점만 채워 어둡게만 표현하는 것이 아닌, 입체적인 모간 표현을 위해 5차에 걸친 체계적 작업으로 성공적인 모근과 모간 작업을 개발했지요. 그런데 그 후로도 저는 만족하고 싶지 않았어요. 분명 더 어둡고 리얼하게 머리카락을 표현할 수 있는 기술이 있을 것이고, 그 일을 나만이 할 수 있다는 자신감이 있었습니다. 그리고 다시 외롭고도 치열한 연구와 실험의 시간을 가지며, 흑인 곱슬머리에서 고안한 3D 입체표현방식의 ASMP를 탄생시켰지요.”
온라인상에서 디크리스 대표를 이미 알고 있었던 해외 팬들은 그의 강연이 끝난 후 하나같이 입을 모아 “열렬한 팬입니다, 당신의 기술을 동경해왔습니다, 디크리스를 보기 위해 여기까지 왔어요” 등의 메시지를 전하며 일제히 휴대폰을 들고 그와 사진찍기 바빴다. 이날 디크리스 대표는 ASMP 기술과 더불어 자체 개발한 더블엑스(DOUBLE X) 머신과 두피 전용 디스칼프케어(D-Scalp Care) 제품 등도 추가로 선보여 높은 관심을 받았다.

국내 유명 연예인은 물론, 디크리스 대표의 손길을 거친 무수한 고객들이 제2의 인생을 살고 있다는 소식 중에서도 특히 결혼식 연락을 많이 받는다는 그는 “정말 많이 결혼시켰죠”라며 뿌듯함에 훈훈한 미소를 지었다.
“20대인데 탈모로 인해 모태 솔로라고? 그럼 여자친구 만들어 줘야지! 하면서 디자인했던 친구가 어느새 결혼한다며 양복을 맞추러 가는 길에 저에게 인증샷을 보내주고요. 자녀들이 대머리인 아빠가 부끄러워 같이 못 다니겠다고 모자를 푹 눌러쓰고 찾아오신 아버님이 계셨는데요. 이분 내가 진짜 세상에서 가장 멋진 아빠로 변신시켜드려야지! 라는 진심을 점 하나하나에 꾹꾹 눌러 담았죠. 그분 역시 자신감 회복과 함께 아이들이 ‘우리 아빠 너무 멋있다’고 정말 좋아한다며 ‘선생님 덕분에’라는 감사연락을 받고, 제가 오히려 행복을 선물받는 기분이었습니다.”

“서양인은 이목구비 자체가 동양인과 다르기 때문에 헤어라인을 어떤 각도로 하여도 잘 어울리지만, 동양인은 달라요. 그 사람의 눈동자 색, 웃을 때 팔자주름, 턱선에서 떨어지는 어깨라인, 전체적인 체구 등 디테일한 관찰과 그분의 삶에 깊숙이 들어가 직업, 생활패턴 등의 면밀한 분석이 먼저 밑그림이 돼야 해요. 이후, 두피에 단순하게 까만 색소를 채워 넣는 것이 아닌 탈모 진행상태·두피타입과 모발의 특징·패턴·컬러를 정확하게 파악하여 자연스럽고도 멋진 개인 맞춤 디자인을 합니다.”

‘SMP (Scalp Micro Pigmentation)’ started in the UK in 2002 as a procedure using fine needles to cover scalp wounds through injecting pigment into the scalp. While it has been having explosive popularity as a new solution to hair loss problems in developed countries such as the United States and Europe since 2019, the ‘2021 SMP EXPO’ was held from September 30 to October 2 in Arizona, USA. After a short while of waiting for D-CHRIS, the representative of D-Black Academy Gangnam branch on the 2nd floor of 536-1, Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, I felt a special aura was radiating the moment he walked in the room as if a single SMP art piece appeared. During the interview, with his intense yet deep gaze, I felt the life of an artist who redesigns a person’s life not just as a businessman for a profit gain.
“After knowing a genetic symptom of hair loss runs in the family, I became anxious about hair loss since childhood especially by the time I grew mindful of my appearances. I have seen it from generation to generation, from grandfather to father. Hair loss which started in my early 20s came to me as a terrifying disease that shook my whole young life including work, dating, and sports. I tried almost everything from hair transplant, dietary medicine, medicine to skin application, and wigs but in the end the only thing that came back to me was deeper wounds such as extreme phobia and various drug side effects. The SMP treatment which I found out by chance also left me only pains and scars from numerous failures and blue tattoos. However, I felt the joy of having a hairline even for a brief moment along the way. With the hope of having it again, I tested my hair many times. After 7-8 years of testing, I turned into a nice head shaver and not a baldy anymore. Afterwards, with the feeling of new life’s joy, I thought there maybe numerous others suffering from hair loss like myself in the past which led me into launching the D-Black Academy.”

The SMP industry has been gaining popularity particularly in the United States in recent years, and the largest annual SMP EXPO which introduces artistic hair loss solutions was held in the US. Among them, ‘2021 SMP EXPO’ was held with the purpose of inviting CEO D-Chris who he has nearly 10,000 Instagram (@d_chris_black) followers. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, he cautiously boarded a flight to the United States to answer continuous DMs and calls by his followers.
In the conference where various hot SMP experts from different countries gathered together, CEO D-Chris presented the world's first ‘ASMP(Art-SMP)’ technology developed by improving shortcomings of the existing SMPs, and attracted the attention of stakeholders around the world.
“Before developing ASMP technology, D-Black Academy differentiated itself on existing SMP with ‘2D SMP’ through years of research and self-testing. Through 5 rounds of systematic work, we developed a successful hair root and hair shaft work in order to express three-dimensional hair shafts, rather than simply filling in dots to darken them. Even after that, I didn’t want to rest being satisfied. There must be a technology that can express darker and more realistic hair. I had the confidence that only I could do it. And again, after having a lonely and intense time of research and experiments, I created ASMP, a 3D stereoscopic __EXPRESSION__ devised from African curly hair.”
After the presentation, overseas fans who already knew CEO D-Chris via online were busy sharing messages such as “I’m an avid fan, I’ve admired your technology, I’ve come all the way to see you, D-Chcris” and taking pictures with him by mobile phones, all at once. On the same day, CEO D-Chris also received a huge attention by introducing the self-developed DOUBLE X machine and D-Scalp Care products in addition to the ASMP technology.

He receives many news, a large number of which are wedding invitations and on happy second lives, from not only domestic celebrities but also from countless customers from overseas who have gone through the touch of CEO D-Chris. “I’ve really got many people married,” he said with a warm and proud smile.
“A verification photo was sent to me from a young man who was on his way to a tailor’s for his wedding suit. I remember telling him that I was gonna get him a girlfriend because he was in his 20s and still single. I designed for him one of my best piece. I also remember determined to transform a baldy father into the coolest looking man in the world by designing for him who earlier visited me wearing a hat deep down his head and told me his children didn’t want to go outside with him because of his hair. He was also able to regain confidence. He sent me a thank-you message saying that his children now think their dad is cool. ‘Thanks to you’ episodes like these make me feel I am gifted with happiness.”

“Western people have different facial features than Asians. They look good from any angle of hairline, but Asians are different. Detailed observation such as eye color, nasolabial folds when smiling, shoulder line falling from chin line, overall body shape, careful analysis of occupation and life patterns, etc., should be drawn up first. Even after that we don’t simply fill the scalp with black pigment, but accurately identify the progress of hair loss, scalp type, hair characteristics, hair pattern and color in order to create a natural and stylish personalized design.”
As the initial name (D) suggests, all the businesses that D-Chris does “start with dots and end with dots.” He is prepared to expand his business to a world stage for overall life-style completion of head shavers including healthcare, cafe and travel together with a clothing brand ‘Hagler. D’ which he launched. He expressed an ambition by saying that “I want to create a K-SMP town which can make everyone remind of Made in Korea when someone talks about SMP,” This reporter is looking forward to the future he will draw!
