When you think of Park Won-soon, the 34th Mayor of Seoul, what comes to your mind at first?

I focused myself on thinking about that question. and compared his political concept with the German concept.

What really attracted my attention is Park Won-soon's position as human right activist and how he fought for it.

In Germany he would have been seen as a hero for protesting for democracy and especially to even spent months in prison for his great convictions.

This courage is what makes a good Mayor Park.

He spent 30 years on standing up for social justice.

He even once suggested a friendly soccer match and an orchestra event between South Korea and North Korea.

He was a principal founder of the nonprofit watchdog organization People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy which monitors government regulatory practices and fights political corruption.

Park stepped down from PSPD in 2002 to run “The Beautiful Foundation”, a philanthropic group that promotes volunteerism and community service and addresses issues of income inequality.

Beginning in 2005, Park served as part of South Korea's Truth and Reconciliation Commission to address the history of human rights violations in Korean history from Japan's rule of Korea in 1910 up until the end of Authoritarian Rule in Korea with the election of President Kim Young-sam in 1993.

All his fights and engagement for solving social, educational, environmental, and political problems should be highly appreciated.

I think that his work and commitment for a better social equity proves that he's a great Mayor.

Germans would say the Ramon-Magsaysay-Price he won in 2006 in the category Public Service is more than well-earned.

I recognized many parallels and similarities with our chancellor Angela Merkel.

Not only do they have nearly the same age, they also share a very similar politic concept.

What I noticed was that many Germans are interested in Korean Politics, probably because of our good diplomatic relations with each other.

Who wouldn't want to know who's calling the shots in Seoul, per se the world metropolis.

당신은 서울의 제 34대 시장인 박원순에 대해 생각할 때, 무엇이 가장 먼저 떠오르는가?

나는 그 질문에 대해 스스로 촛점을 맞췄고, 박 시장의 정치적 개념과 독일의 정치적 개념을 비교했다. 나의 관심을 끈 것은 박원순의 인권운동가로서의 지위였고, 그가 투쟁했던 방식이었다.

독일에서 그는 민주주의를 위해 투쟁한 영웅으로 보일수도 있을 것이다. 위대한 신념으로 인해 심지어는 감옥에서 몇 달을 보내기도 했으며 이러한 용기가 그를 좋은 시장으로 만들었다.

30년 동안 사회의 정의를 옹호하며 남북한 간의 친선축구경기와 오케스트라를 제안하기까지도 했다. 정부의 규제 관행을 감시하고 정치적 부패를 척결하는 비영리 감시 단체인 참여연대의 주요한 창시자이기도 한 그는 2002년, 자유 지원제와 지역 봉사활동을 장려하고 소득 불평등 문제를 다루는 박애적인 단체인 ‘아름다운재단’을 운영하기 위하여 참여연대에서 은퇴했다. 2005년부터 시작하여, 박원순은 1910년 한국의 일본에 대한 지배에서부터 1993년 김영삼 대통령의 선거로 인한 한국의 독재 정권이 종식될 때까지의 한국 인권침해 역사에 관해 다루기 위하여 한국의 진실화해위원회의 일원으로도 활동했다.

사회적, 교육적, 환경적, 그리고 정치적 문제를 해결하기 위한 그의 모든 투쟁과 참여는 매우 높이 평가되어야만 한다. 나는 보다 더 나은 사회적 평등을 이루고자 하는 그의 업적과 헌신은 그가 위대한 시장임을 증명하는 것이라고 생각한다. 독일인들은 아마도 공공 서비스 분야에서 그가 수상한 막사이사이상을 더 충분히 누릴 자격이 있다고 말할 것이다.

나는 박 시장과 우리의 메켈 총리와의 많은 평행점과 유사점을 알아차렸다.

그들은 나이가 거의 같을 뿐만 아니라, 또한 매우 유사한 정치적 신념까지도 공유하고 있다. 또한 독일인들이 한국의 정치에 관심이 있다는 것인데, 아마도 서로에 대한 우리의 좋은 정치적 관계 때문이라고 생각한다.

세계적 도시, 서울을 지휘하는 자가 누구인지 누군들 알고 싶지 않겠는가?
